so there was this article and other people may have heard about this.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bausch & Lomb Inc. (BOL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said it was alerted by Hong Kong health officials to eye infections in users of its contact lens solution in November 2005, months before sales were halted, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
A company spokeswoman said Hong Kong health officials noted an increase in hospital admissions due to contact lens-related keratitis from June to September 2005, according to the Journal.
A Bausch & Lomb representative could not immediately be reached on Thursday at the company's Rochester, New York headquarters.
Bausch & Lomb said seven cases of the infection were linked to its product by Hong Kong health officials.
The company reported the cases to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which was informed of the problem by Hong Kong authorities in December, but the company's report said that "no causal factors can be determined and no conclusion can be drawn", the Journal said.
FDA officials said this month that the company's contact lens solution was currently under inspection by the agency, which could take up to a month.
U.S. health authorities are looking into more than 100 cases of a rare fungal infection that can cause permanent vision loss if left untreated.
This month, Bausch & Lomb stopped shipping the solution, called ReNu with MoistureLoc, and urged retailers to pull it from shelves


the addition to this most folks dont know and I got this from my eye doctor. Equate one of the more commonly used generic contact solutions, is actually ReNu rebottled. You may want to keep this in mind.

how i'm confused about is this: is it all ReNu saline solutions or just the ReNu MoistureLoc kind they mention at the end of the article?
i use Equate (i think) but it's just regular ol' saline solution, not some special moisture locking stuff.

the chemical mix that goes into their saline solution is called moisture lock. Supposed to keep contacts moist longer or some such. The real question is does that mix go in the equate stuff as well. According to the optometrist it is the same stuff. obviously the whole product line is not contaminated, but enough is and the results serious enough that i have stopped using both products.

actually, this faq from Bausch & Lomb would suggest that their ReNu solution isn't repackaged as Equate or any other brand for that matter, look at the last question.
