So my reason for having a crappy day.

I woke up extra early today because the clock at my grandparents place had not been set back. That and staying up late means mccoy is lacking sleep.

When I woke I went to check my email. While online I talked to my roomy via IM. I find out our renat is going up by 30 bucks. Now this is not to say it is no longer cheap. 725 a month for a four bedroom split between four people is still pretty decent. But this after a couple of minor rent raises over the last 3 years is a trend my roomy and her beau who is another roomy dont like. I cant say I blame them in this. The rent raise goes into effect in january. It was explained to me that this MAY(not definate) cause at least two of my roomates to look for other housing arangements. I cant afford the 725 a month on my own on top of utilities. and my remaining roomy has not weighed in on this point so she may yet agree with the prevailing trend. I dont particularly want to move. I like the apartment and the people I live around. sigh. Obviously nothing is writen in stone but it has made for a bad start to the day. Combined with being sleep deprived has put me in a foul mood.

in other news I have decided to be republican today.

Why have you decided to be a republican, and is it only for today, or is this a permanent change?

But I'll tell you why I hate freedom, or at least how people have led me to believe it should be.

I hate freedom because people try to take it away. I have simple freedoms that have been taken away from me simply because someone somewhere said no. Because of this, I can't drive a car, own a home, or live a life that I would consider normal. Yes, there are steps that I can take towards fixing that, and I am. I can't take a lot of these steps as fast as I can because of some of those freedoms that I've had taken.

I hate freedom because it's so tenuous.

Granted, I've never been in another country, though I wouldn't mind seeing how life is without the freedoms that I do have. It might give me perspective.

Our rent has always been at 695 since we've lived up in this apartment (2 years ago?). That yours was lower before was probably an aberration due to the rotating people on the lease - essentially the rental office wasn't bound to keep the original price people had when the first lease was signed.

That said, you should consider being an awesome roommate to them :) Convince them to stay by doing more around the apartment. Not criticizing, however (I can see where what I'm saying could be seen as criticism, that isn't the intent).

Dont get me wrong. I dont want my roommates to go. I may annoy them sometimes and vice versa but they are great rroommates and I like having them around. I dont blame them for their reasoning though. They make less money than me and this is more drastic a change for them than me. I am trying to come up with some ideas on making things easier. I may be able to fix this.

Call your apartment complex and feign interest in acquiring info on their availability/costs/etc, pretending you are not currently a resident--use a false name if you have to. Find out what the rate for new leases are, if yours is going to be higher, complain. If they say tough cookies... find out who handles your local tenant/landlord issues because they're likely ripping off more people than just you.

See I dont see it as ripping off. They are still lower than most 4 bedroom places I can think of. even with the occasionalincrease they are still in keeping with inflation for the most part. I am sad it is not still the 645 it was when I first moved in but I have been here for several years and it was leased begining well before I moved in by like 4 or more years. all in all even at 725 I think I am getting a good deal by comparison to most 4 bedroom places.

My point being: if they are charging new tenets $645 and you guys $725, regardless of the value there is a disparity. Someone else would be getting the same thing at the same place for $80 cheaper. Hiking the rent on current tenets who are more likely to suffer than move is a common tactic used by corporate managed apartment complexes, and shouldn't be encouraged.

actually they are raising the rent on the whole complex. It was 645 when I first moved in because they had delayed bringing us in line with rent charged everyone else because we had a continous leese for so long. They brought us up to the 695 they have been charging everyone about 8 months ago. They had been charging others this for a while. Now they are raising it again in january for the whole complex.
