(99942) Apophis hitting the earth with an impact energy of between 800 and 1400 megatons.
Chances of impact in 2036 is 1:45000

getting struck by lightening
1:280,000

being shot
1:3013

winning the lottery
1:146,107,962

So the chances of civilization almost definitely being reduced to near stone age level is somewhere between me getting shot or me being struck by lightening. I have been shot at. I have been in a car struck by lightening. Explain to me why Nasa assures us we should not be worried about apophis? Maybe it will keep to the trend and miss. I certainly hope so.

Now i would like to buck the odds and win the lottery.

of course knowing my luck that would guarantee the impact.

Don't be silly. The world will end in 2012 when Quetzalcoatl comes back. We'll all be long gone well before Apophis hits.

Now, don't you feel better? :)

Since there are many people and many occurrences of lightning storms, that probability is certainly high enough to cause some events. However, there is only one earth and one asteroid with that high a probability of impact. It's a matter of event rate and not necessarily probability.

It doesn't exactly sound like it's time to start working on ol' hand-axe-flaking technique.

Ah but it might be a good idea to plan on the possability being high enough to look at maybe making some basic plans for in case it does go bad. I am not at wear tin foil hats level but I could see myself laying supplies and being some place solid on that day. maybe not. We will certainly know more after 2029.

Not me, baby. If civilization goes, I plan to go with it, as otherwise I'll slowly go blind from lack of glaucoma meds. You see, I have a lot invested in civilization.

You've been in a house struck by lightning as well. I think you have pretty well used up all of your lightning points.

I have also been near tornados a few times. Yeah I have pushed my luck.
