Game geeks of various stripes.


I just got through watching the finale of Jericho, which was really pretty good...if they were going to continue the show. I was thinking it would be interesting to run a Jericho game. Basically an early post apocalyptic game. Rather than the whole world has turned to crap and there are ZOMBIES everywhere, a more of the world is shaken and individuals have to take a stand try and rebuild. The concept of a game set in the second American civil war that is described at the end of Jericho could be really compelling.

The question is what system do you do a game like that? You don't want to go to rules light cause well the combat that happens should be more believable than a lot of rules light systems might reflect. I am looking for different peoples takes on the idea. It may not happen mind you but I am thinking about it.

Use Twilight 2000. Ultra-realistic combat rules. So realistic, in fact, that combat will be rare, just because no one will want to cope with the math.

To far the other direction rules wise though the settings are almost the same in form and feel.

I can't say I love the rules, but d20 Modern is a flexible system that could probably carry that style of game.

I love the original system of Deadlands, but the system itself has more camp than you might be looking for with that setting.

I liked the idea of Jericho a lot, although the execution was perhaps not always what I might have wished. :)

I thought of D20 modern. I am not a fan of it myself but you may be right.

I actually have the savage world RPG(deadlands base system). I may take a look at it and see if it can be a little less cinematic.

as to the show....it was a little weak for the first few episodes after the pilot. The last half of the first season really was quite good and this final season was also very good. Basically they removed the soap opera elements and focused on the cooler story elements.

I just played a bit of a game using the Fate system and I really like it. The combat system is fairly straightforward and simple.

For me, it really boils down to how fatal you really want the system to be. A fair risk system would be WoD of course, but if you're looking for something that is a little less re-rolly character wise, I'd recommend D20 Modern with the Wound/Vitality system (if it's not already in there, I forget).
