To further expound on my enjoyment of The Big Bang Theory, I decided to show a sample of their humor. I picked this one because if I have not had this discussion, I have had one just like it.

I'd laugh, but, um, I have similar conversations at work on a regular basis... So I'm not sure if that kills the humor or just improves it.

What's fun is if you do what they do... to THIS clip they're in. Because Superman actually swoops UP. ;)

Well that just confounds the problem doesn't it. He is adding his momentum to the problem then. You have to deal with the even higher relative velocities involved.

Then again, it is unlikely she falls fast enough to reach terminal velocity. I don't think there is enough distance fallen to reach that fully.

yeah so.... I have in fact gotten into these kinds of talks.

Now we can always bring up the Man of Steel. Woman of Klenex discussion brought up by Larry Niven.

Ah yes, nothing like a discussion of an ejaculatory response blowing Lois Lane head off...

All of the Salskin produced Superman movies have flaws. Lets not forget that at the end of the movie when he turns the planet backwards to change time, he likely would have caused massive tidal shifts that would have caused massive damage to all eastern coastal areas. Also he created a paradox where he could not have been able to prevent the other city from being wiped out by a missile strike. Or if he has the ability to read Lois' mind why couldn't he read Lex's mind?

You people frighten me. It's Science *FICTION*! It's not supposed to make sense. Sheesh! ;~)

Uh oh, I've found a new show I have to Tivo.

They also say he catches her two feet from the ground, and clearly that is false by many stories. :)

As for the woman of kleenex stuff, that makes no sense. It would mean every time Superman blew his nose a building would fall down and anytime he touched something he'd crush it. He'd never be able to shake a hand or hug anyone if you believe that.

Yay for nerd discussions!

I LOVE this show!

There are so many references to actual conversations I've had with friends in the past, a strange similarity to several friends I've had in the past, and well, the two episodes where they are playing WOW and Halo pretty much clinch it.

Not that I'd ever name the people they might remind me of....*)

Someone may have pointed this out.. maybe not... but here my pov

everything within a 1/4 of an inch shares his man of steel invulnerability ... so what is stopping his zero g effect from affecting Loius Lane? My point in this is that if at the moment he touches her, her weight would drop to zero (any woman's wet dream) and thus have 0 momentum... right?

From: [identity profile] technoir.livejournal.com

You contention is completely flawed.

First you contend that anything in contact with the man of steel gets his invulnerability. This is on the face wrong. Is very much in contact with bad guys when he knocks them senseless. Their contacting his skin does not prevent their being damaged by his punch.

Also you see to take another angle in your arguement that Lois became zero weight when she contacted him and this was desirable. Being weightless is not really desirable first off as your weight keeps you from flying off into space and the change in blood flow tends to make your face puff out instead of your lower extremities. I don't think anyone likes to be puffy faced. Also the superman does not render things weightless by touching them. He show signs of strain when he is trying to lift particularly heavy objects. This indicates they still have weight and he is just that strong.

From: [identity profile] guardian-4ngel.livejournal.com

actually it is true about his invulnerability... look at his outfit.. that's why he wears tights.... sorry i can't reference the issue where they explained it all..

also its negative g's that would send you off into space... 0 g's means that if you jumped you wouldn't come down.. but you wouldn't just fly off on your own.. there have been many times where he would take someone by the hand and both would fly with him.. maybe its just an error or a high comic writer that day...? though I never did figure out heavy objects... maybe its a ratio to mass issue?!?

From: [identity profile] technoir.livejournal.com

His outfit may be invulnerable when he wears it but it does not extend to anything he is touching clearly.

As to the zero g sending you off into space. If you apply the simple force of taking a step you would go flying up till you were acted on by something else.

And no he has never canceled gravity for others. He has flown with people but that is more a product of his strength. The fact they extend their arms makes them a kite not weightless.

Holding her with his fingertips? All of the force to keep her up would have been on that point. If she was somehow aerodynamic and could fly at that velocity, the force pulling on her arm to keep her going forward would damage her.

From: [identity profile] msrlapin.livejournal.com

Sorry to burst bubbles, but the current DC Comics explanation for the super strength makes it all work fine.

Here's the gist of it: Supes uses a version of self-only telekinesis to emulate super strength (which is why his strength doesn't directly correlate to his muscle mass.) When he chooses to "catch" something, he's extending the TK and cushioning it from velocity and other physics issues - this is why he can catch a falling skyscraper covered with plate glass and not shatter it. If he chooses not to "catch" something, well, then, things get hurt. This also means that he can fly with a fine disregard to aerodynamics and velocity, and just move about like, er, he was on wires or some such. The "wires" are in his mind; he's TKing himself.

Which is another way of waggling your fingers and saying "it's magic", really. Force and velocity don't matter, because they all get shoved around by a fictitious force that we can more or less say does whatever we say it does, as long as the end result is cool.
