oh well another person I respected drops tremendously in my eyes.

thanks to[info]matociquala for the link.

So Orson Scott Card, a man whose work I have really really enjoyed in the past, has gone and proved himself a complete and utter prat. He posted his opinion piece on Mormon Times stating the greatest threat to democracy in this country is gay marriage being legalized by the courts in Massachusetts and California.

article can be found here.

http://mormontimes.com/ME_blogs.php?id=1586

"The first and greatest threat from court decisions in California and Massachusetts, giving legal recognition to "gay marriage," is that it marks the end of democracy in America."

His diatribe proves himself deliberately ignorant of both nature and history. I say deliberately ignorant because he is not by nature a stupid man. He has demonstrated some smarts in his writing. This is him pretending not knowing what he does know for his "faith". A faith which cannot stand the test of views counter to it is not worth having.

I know, it really gets to you when someone whose writing seems reasonably enlightened goes and says something so incredibly stupid, doesn't it?

I've been vaguely aware of Card's feelings on homosexuality for awhile. It lessened my desire to meet the man, but so far I haven't let it lessen my enjoyment of his books.

It is the Tom Cruise phenomenon. I freely acknowledge Tom Cruise is a complete nut ball I would not want to be int he same room with for five minutes.

I will still see his movies cause he can act.

::headdesk:: Having been raised in the church, I still don't see why, out of all of the ethical injunctions mentioned for Christians in general or Mormons in specific, including the several that, you know, Jesus was actually recorded to have mentioned, so many modern monotheists get so neurotically fixated on homosexuality.

[identity profile] technoir.livejournal.com 2008-07-31 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think fixation may be a key term there.

He's got one on climate change which is equally wrong. Sometimes I think he's doing it on purpose, just to see how many people can't spot flawed logic.

I can forgive someone being a doubter on some of the climate change stuff. There is no iron clad set of evidence saying for sure, just a preponderance of evidence saying it is happening and why.

This one though is just irrational ignoring of so much. It boggles the mind.

A Mormon has no business telling others what a "threat" to democracy is...

[identity profile] technoir.livejournal.com 2008-07-31 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
ummm. that statement is almost as bad as his. Stereotyping an entire religion as being irrelevant or a threat themselves is not kosher.

Sorry you didn't know about this, man.

OSC is a very nice guy with whom I have strong political disagreements. I look at it as a case of good guy, poor reasoning skills.

I knew he was on the right wing side. I did not know it was quite this far.

He's been raving like this for some time. I remember him popping up during the DOMA arguments and that was during the Clinton era.

I still read Ender and the Bean (Ender's Shadow) stuff. Pretty good. Alvin Maker ran out of fun stuff after about book 2. Never got into anything else.

It appears that yet again knowledge leads to unhappiness. Not knowing this about him I could respect him. Knowing just makes him an annoying.

The books are still good.
