REally slow night tonight at work.

Thought I would post another notion for a scifi larp now that I am not deathly ill.

Real world has some tech toys in it that people will want to bring. Laptops, pda's, video camera's. People will want to have access to the technology they can get. I think this is fine in a sci fi larp as long as there is some mechanism to prevent abuse. So that being said there should be no device with some sort of effect that does not have a tag to keep track of it. I.e. if you want your charicter to carry around that real tricoder you bought on ebay fine. Just show it to the guys running the game before you bring it inplay so we know it is there and it has a tag. The other coralary to this is if your charicter is going to have a lot of cool gadgets then you best take an increased wealth advantage to afford the in play costs.

My observations...

When it comes to Sci-Fi larp, it is more efficient and fun to
play paintball and bring along your boffer sword.

Seriously, Sci-fi has so many "World changing" technical
issues that you just can't play it for shit in a state park.
Which leaves trying to play it in urban areas which will get
you arrested and or shot.

Lovely notion though.

NOt sure I like this part. This gives extras to people with out of play wealth. So if you are poor, you don't get any gadgets, and if you manage to finally get something cool out of play, you would then have to pay a big in game cost too.

THis reminds me too much of the fact that in most larps, a newbie can come in and find the keen plate mail or chain mail treasure TAG, but until they can afford to buy some - and to pretty exacting standards - this tag is worthless. Unlike any other treasure you get. People might as well not even get armor tags, it should be a phys-rep system at that point.

And truthfully, you would have to be pretty rich to be willing to risk your laptop at a larp - with no intention of running off and fighting.

We could just rent one of those urban combat training grounds that the military uses. If we had them keep their fake residents there, we'd even get free NPCs. :)

I concidered the issue your talking about. I specifically thought about people wanting to play with hacking when i came up with this. The other tech devices though cool flavor bits really dont give much in the way of in charicter benefit. Also people using a laptop will not suddenly get improvement in their skill at hacking. The only advantage is they will get to do it anywhere.
