New years.

Happy new years to all. I was having sort of a relaxing new years this year. Instead of hard partying I sat at home and watched movies with a few friends and dranks some good scotch. While I feel bad cause I am afraid friends who had parties in atlanta or in ktown would think I was slighting them(which was not the case), I have to admit this was a good way to experience new years eve.

My new years resolution this year is to get control of my weight and clean up some of my stories and start submitting them for publication. The cleaning up stories will take time but is definately a project I will finish. As to the getting control of my weight the plan is to eat out no more than 4 times a month, work out at the gym, and keep my calorie intake relatively low. So far I am doing okay. Yesterday hit the gym for 20 minutes of cycle time. I would have done more but felt really bad. Note to self dont go to gym before eating anything all day. I ate my grandmothersblack eyed peas and did some laundry but not till after. I have laid in some food in the fridge that should get me through for a while. No eating out for a while. I may try and go all month with out but that is not writen in stone.

Over the long weekend I got experience why Wow can be fun. I got to run around with a bunch of people relatively the same level as me and we were talking on skype in a conference while we did it so I did not have to worry about typing tells while we did it. I hate typing tells as I am not good at it. While doing other things with the mouse and keyboard sending messages for me is difficult and I have a hard time sending information to people much less have a good conversation. Having the real time voice chat going at the time helps alot in my enjoyment. This is not to say I cant enjoy the game with out it but it is much more fun with. I will probably be on tonight on whisperwind for a while after I get in from the gym.

The podcast is mostly done. I will start recording I think this week(yes I know I have said this before). So I also had an idea to add an interview to the feed. Lee do you think you would be up for interview? or Brandes how about you? I can do it through skype. There is a program that will allow you to record skype conversations. Just an idea.

You know, DDO has integrated voice chat, and you can automatically talk to anyone in your party, even if they don't have a mic...

Not that i'm suggesting anything. :)

I have questions on DDO actually. My understanding is that is is strictly a gather a group to go on a module model of doing things. Is this correct? Is there any story elements to the game? If so is it any good? How close is it to D&D? Could i for instance play a swashbuckler or a warlock? Is there no PvP element? Can you do multiclassing as you can in D&D? Do they have epic levels or are you capped at 20th level? I might try it if it offers something I might be interested.

It is for the most part a group-only game, but you can solo things -- like real DnD, however, if you go solo into a module equal to your own level, you'll probably die, or at least have to spend 5-15 times the consumable resources that you would have to in a group. There are some truly awesome players who can solo the higher level quests, though. You can enter a quest by yourself or with up to 1-5 other players (so six person groups max, unless you are in one of the 12 man raids). You don't need to find a full group for everything. All of the quests are instanced.

The quests do have stories...better than the ones I saw in WoW, but not absolutely wonderful (it's an MMO, after all). Still, there are some follow up quests for things you do at lower levels, so I guess it can be pretty cool if you pay attention to them. I usually read them completely the first time, then ignore it later on.

Currently, there are no prestige classes, monks, or druids, with a level cap of 12. Monks, druids, and a level cap increase to 20 are slated for late next year (they'll probably release this stuff in 2 level increments). Unless you are a really hardcore player who powerlevels a lot, you probably won't run out of things to do, particularly if you have more than one character (my characters are 12, 10, 9, 8, 5, and 5, and my highest hasn't done a fair number of the higher level quests yet). Even repeating quests in DDO on a higher difficulty level is, in my opinion, better than the "collect 8 rabbit ears" quests that WoW has -- some of the new quests have randomized traps and such, as well.

Overall, it's reasonably close to DnD. There are some differences, but it's more or less the same game. Major differences include the way BAB gives you extra attacks, spell points for casters instead of spell slots, and a much smaller skill list (since many of the tabletop skills would be very hard to implement in DDO, or would be nearly useless). You also get four enhancement slots, and four action points per level to spend on enhancements. Enhancements include things that make your healing stronger (clerics/bards), stuff that powers up a certain element (wizards/sorcerers), and enhancements that give you bonuses to confirm critical hits (fighters). The whole system is supposed to be overhauled soon, though, and I don't really know what they are going to do with it. Currently, each class has certain enhancements that they almost need to take, and i'm thinking that they'll make it so that you have more of a real choice when the system is updated.

I'd call the growth of the game pretty explosive; it's grown over 50% bigger since it's release last March. They put in a content update with new quests every 1d2 months, some of which are bigger "modules" that have more quests and other significant upgrades.

PvP in the game is secondary. Generally, there is no PvP -- you can't attack your fellow party members in a quest; there isn't even any friendly fire. However, you can go to a tavern brawling area to fight other players, or sign up for deathmatch and/or capture the flag games. PvP is 100% consentual.

You can multiclass more or less like you can in PnP. You are limited to three classes, however. There aren't any multiclassing XP penalties to worry about.

there is enough there to make me want to say try it if they have a free trial but I cant say it cries to me. The pretty much having to group all the time seems a bit cumbersome especially if my friends are not online at the time I am on. Also the sort of being teased with it being D&D but not having the full range of options available seems like it would be frustrating. I am waiting for someone to do something truely different though and the current crop of games have not made me go crazy for them.

Thbe combat in most mmorpg games is boring to me first off. It is a set of key strokes or mouse clicks you do and repeat as needed. I could almost sleep through most combats as little as it involves my participation in the process. Role play online tends to bore me. I can honestly say I have never seen an online roleplay exchange that impressed me in the least. Dont get me wrong I have had some fun. They dont all suck all the time, but I just expect more than what I have gotten so far.

One of things i have looked forward to in fallen earth is the combat and character rules are very different than alot of mmo's. It is an impressive change and I think represents where the games will go in the future for a while. It is definately the one I am looking forward to getting into next.

There is a free trial at www.ddo.com. Seven days. If you decide to give it a shot let me know.

Combat in DDO is more involved than in WoW, and faster paced with more combatants -- not paying attention in a battle is not a good idea in DDO. You also have resource management, because your HP/SP doesn't regenerate automatically.

Also, there is an easy to use Looking for Group/Looking for More system that you can use to find other players if none of your friends are online. DDO's playerbase is on average older and more mature than a lot of other MMOs, since the game requires teamwork.

Damn!! I can't believe I forgot the blak-eyed peas!!

I'm good with editing if you need help. Just let me know, hun.

Thanks for the offer dear heart. It seems I have high ratio of friends who are good at editing. I seem to attract english majors. You know what I mean.

English majors of "should have beens" More than happy to help with anything you need given my limited time and resources. On that note, I should tell you that D. had her most success with the diet thing when she tracked her intake and limited her fat/sugar to X/Y amount per day. When she did that, her overall calorie intake dropped to nearly nothing (1000-1500 instead of 2000+). She gave herself a reward system and a little bit of "party time" for a binge so she didn't feel deprived. Overall, she lost 20 or so but then we got pregnant. :) And also.... Emerald Dream Night Elves... join us... join the Elune side... It is your destiny....

I'm just saying. yo. *heh*

From: [identity profile] technoir.livejournal.com

Actually the tracking thing is part of the plan. I am setting a lower calorie goal than I have used in the past. 2500 this time rather than 3000 calories which was recomended to me. I am using my eating out as my rewards I think. Also tying my rewards to work out goals though I want to get into it fully again before I decide what the work out goals will be.

As to the night elves on elune. maybe. I have thre servers worth of characters so I dont have anyone over 14th level as a result. one of my problems has been in the past on mmo's that many of my friends who play have powerful characters I cant hang with. I should say I have had less trouble with that in WoW but it has been overall a problem.

From: [identity profile] sluagh1977.livejournal.com

A guildmate eventually realized that all the people he RPed with in the beginning he didn't talk to anymore since they were so much higher level than he was. Because he spent more time RPing than XPing. The RP servers are better about such things, but even then you have to "find your roleplay". Most of the time I spend with the lower levels is when we have social events or are defending against the horde.

And all games have their problems. I miss CoH but I hate how they nerfed CrazyDiamond's kicks. I miss EQ's crafting, but I don't miss how I could barely solo a light blue with my shaman while druids could tank four reds. Find your spot, and be happy this new year.

oh, and write down your tracking plan. and maybe track it in excel or something. writing down things, seeing charts of effort and reward really helped me for a long time. ...man, I need to get back into that...

www.calorie-count.com allows me to track it all. One reason why I love the site.
