Save Rocky Horror

Okay so Rocky Horror has long been an institution in geek culture in particular and general pop culture as well. It was made in 1975. Since then it has ruled the midnight showings of theaters around the world. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Well all of that said and shown, it is in danger sort of. MTV which has managed to stop being interesting to any one older than 15, has decided they want to do a remake. If this were a less civilized age I would simply find those guilty and feed them to the crows a piece at a time. That is not an option of course so I settle for the petition. Sign it and pass it around. Maybe we can make them come to their senses before it is too late.

I dunno, man. I'm personally a fan of remakes. Not to mention this has been done before, as a (off broadway) stage production that had folks like Joan Jett in it. I don't go protesting new productions of Othello every time they happen just because I saw it once with Avery Brooks in the title role.

That would be a valid consideration. I can see your point... but to me this is about on the level of someone telling me Uwe Boll was remaking the first three Star Wars films.

If they said they were filming the broadway show cast or there was some indication it was being artfully handled I would not object near as much.

Technically, the 1975 movie was, itself, a remake. Rocky Horror is a play. That play, as plays sometimes are, was made into a movie.

I actually like the fact that art of this sort has an opportunity to live in multiple executions. The play Rocky Horror has been performed at theaters all around the world. (I was in it in 2005 - Eddie/Dr. Scott.) If there was only allowed to be one version of the play, a lot of people would never have a chance to see it.

Obviously, nothing will ever replace the grossly flawed yet beloved 1975 movie, but why shouldn't a new group of artists have a chance to create their own version?

There is a part of me that wants to see this. But it's the same part that slows down at traffic accidents.
