I spent a lot of my teenage years on the scifi convention circuit. One of the things I loved about living on the con scene was it never felt like strangers. We were all family even if we never met one another before.

Walking up and giving people hugs happens all the time. Sometimes it is friends and sometimes it is a complete stranger. I kind of miss that.

Meeting a bunch of people who have the same interests as you definitely takes some of that awkward "we don't know each other" stuff away from meeting perfect strangers. It's one of my favorite things about Dragon*Con -- I already know just by being there that I have something in common with most everyone I'll meet. It makes it so much easier for a relatively hermity shy person like myself to come out and talk to new people -- and yes, give them hugs. :)
