Are addictions needed by people?

that is a thought that occurred to me today at work. Not chemical adictions. I mean those little things we spend entirely to much money and time on. Those little foxholes which we jump and hide from life in. For me i guess it is my larps. For some it is EQ(or insert your online addictive game of choice). I have known people for whom it was sex, exercise, fighting. For some it is drugs or alchohol. My dad's was alchohol. He needed it to make life easier. His addiction killed him.

I just wonder what it is aboout us that makes escape from reality so damn important? I have tried on occassion to keep from falling in to my escapes. Sometimes I have failed. I was so busy trying to make time for larps I let my real life suffer for it. When I should have spent my days working my ass off I would take a weekend off and go to a game I couldn't afford without help from my friends. I should have spent more time working and earning money as much as anything to pay some folks who did help me out back. It doesn't matter that alot of these games I played little or nothing to get into them. I should have dealt with live but I didn't

I pulled out of course. The smart ones do. I just wish i knew why we do that. Is the real world that terrible? My hardest times I had no escape for I got to escape the irritating but not the truely tough times in my life. Who knows why have them. It is I suppose a good thing that we do. Maybe we would all go nuts otherwise. Do really crazy things like dress up in home made clothing and chase our friends down with plumbing supplies....oh wait....hmmm...never ming. My bad.

Hi! For me, Livejournal's one of such addictions, along with my collection of cigarette packs, hiking and my cats. These are pretty harmless ones, eh? :^)
By the way, actually, this is the first time I meet am American of my age here. I wonder how come. The mean age of Russians who write here is 27. :))

confrontation

I have tried to talk to him about it a couple of times. He either lies to me which angers me. Or he tries to make me feel guilty for "bringing him down". Apparently a comment suggesting he is not trying very hard to a get a job is needlessly negative and ruins his mood and makes it so he doesn't want to try. Sigh.... such is the trials and tribulations of being friends.

Russia huh? Well nice to meet you.

Re: confrontation

No only a few years. He is a fellow larper. He is a nice guy. I concider him a friend. I just want him to stop self destructing.

Re: confrontation

I hate to admit it, but I haven't found "larper", in the
dictionary... // I don't see how one can stop a grown-up person from
ruining his own life. Sad as it is, "you can't screw your head onto
his shoulders", as a Russian saying goes.

Re: confrontation

Larper: One who larps.

Larp is an acronym for live action role playing game. http://www.larp.com is a site with a listing of several. It is a fun little past time involving boffer weapons, homemade costuming, improvisational acting and some creative writing skills.

and perhaps you are right. Maybe you cant keep someone from ruining their lives. I can however not make it easy. The choice is his I just choose not let my self be the facilitator.

Re: confrontation

We also have historical reconstruction clubs (and role-playing games)
in Russia. Grown-up people running among the woods with fake swords,
and all that. :^) Or staging some historical battles, like Borodino
battle, etc.

Re: confrontation

It is not unlike the reinactor's but actually it is a bit different. We creat whole new tales and epics. It is more fantastical. Sort of living in the lord of the rings for a weekend. I play a wizard in one and a gravedigger in another.

It sounds silly but it is a great way to waste time and energy with friends.

Re: confrontation

Yeah, our role-players also write scenarios, and they stage not only
Lord of the Rings, but other fantasy books as well. // Personally I don't find it silly at all. Only, I prefer "proper" hiking to war games. :)
