Can't watch the trailer, since I'm at work, but - come on, it's Susan Cooper. I loved that series when I was a kid, and I still think they're pretty darn good. Hope they don't mess it up too badly...

Premise doesn't thrill you...? *sputter gasp* Childrens story... Bah! Some of the best fantasy stories have been hidden in the guise of "children's stories. Chronicles of Narnia, The Prydain Chronicles... and of course this. You never read The Dark is Rising? Actors are a dime a dozen... a good story... now thats something special. Of course I suspect they are going to ruin it by setting it in the U.S. I would have thought Hollywood would have learned by now that Americans like Brits. Oh, and the director is the same person who brought us that thrilling and oh so truthful ABC drama... A Path to 9/11.

I have not read Dark is rising. The premise of a young boy who is the chosen protector and has to discover his powers and defeat the evil baddy has well been done a bit to much. It was old hat when Potter came along and it is still old hat. Now I will take it that the book is good on peoples word. The thing that makes me want to see it is the actors. as i know nothing of the quality of the story beyond what you two just told me.

And for the record I never really took to Narnia. it is okay but did not thrill me.

It predates Potter considerably; it's from our schoolboy days. It was a Newbury medal winner.

Oddly, in the books at least, there are villains but no Villain, if that makes sense. The enemy is, more or less, 'the collection of all the evil in the world', and where there are characters who are on the opposite side, the book is never really about DEFEATING them.

How much of that survives the transfer to the big screen remains to be seen.

actually, this is a movie of the second book, which was the most popular. like the Prydain Chronicles for that matter (The Black Cauldron).

The first book is three children gather objects of power, while this, the second book, is the last person of The Light, coming into his power and he must seek out the Signs to complete his coming of age. I agree that this is one of my favorite young adult books. You should give it a read, but then, everyone should read more of the OZ series and maybe Peter and Wendy.

Doesn't look at all like the story I remember... 'spect it will be a pretty but utterly terrible movie much like Eragon was...
