Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] justinjacobson for sharing this tidbit.

So I am not planning on voting for McCain any way. I think he is an okay sort and I don't hate the man but I just disagree with him politically. That said I find the recent post on http://johnmccain.com to be another little nail in the coffin of the chances I would vote for him.

http://www.johnmccain.com/McCainReport/Read.aspx?guid=181471d0-5456-4434-9f78-2f30ffc39459

"It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman's memory of war from the comfort of mom's basement, but most Americans have the humility and gratitude to respect and learn from the memories of men who suffered on behalf of others. John McCain has often said he witnessed a thousand acts of bravery while he was imprisoned, and though not every one has been submitted into the public record, they are remembered by the men who were there (one such only recently reported by Karl Rove though it escaped mention in any of Senator McCain's books). But as Swindle said, this is a "desperate group of people trying to make something out of nothing."

How does playing D&D become a pejorative? Do all of my conservative friends who play D&D now become Obama supporters?

Sigh.

night for real this time.

Michael Goldfarb is an idiot...

Dude - that was a post by Michael Goldfarb (whom I think is an idiot) that referenced John McCain, so they put it up on his website. I wouldn't use that as "another little nail in the coffin" to disagree with McCain.

I have no clue when playing any RPG became a pejorative, and personally I *HATE* how those types of commentators get off on using wide paintbrushes to make statements rather than researching issues.

But like we've always agreed: There are idiots on both sides of the fence. So don't let yourself fall into the trap of taking what one idiot says to heart and putting his words into someone else's mouth. Know what I mean?

Off to bed myself...

Apparently John McCain doesn't believe that nerds are voters. Either that or there is a right wing conspiracy against gaming as it is the devil's game!!

Want the honest truth? I'm usually a straight box Republican. Usually I agree with my political parties choice for President.

Aaaand I'm voting Obama. Period.

Well, he really doesn't make mention of the pro-McCain D&D crowd, who obviously are the successful geeks not in mom's basement, who would never disparage someone with as rich a character history much courage as John McCain.

/sarcasm

Re: Michael Goldfarb is an idiot...

Hmm I noticed it was the Goldfarb character. I just thought he was a staff blogger or something. One could argue they liked the obviously agreed with him or they would not have posted it on the site, but meh. I agree there are stupid folks on both sides.

That said I am still not voting McCain but I had my own more reasoned thoughts on that to begin with. I mean how could I vote for an ABBA fan?

heh.

I posted it mainly cause there are by some reports over a million current and former D&D players in the country. I suspect it has very little to do with who they might vote. This kind of idiocy in commentary is one reason I hate election seasons.

Honestly I am not sure he actually what gets put on his blog in his name. I may be wrong here but I don't think he personally is much of a blogger. I am also pretty sure I would have to explain what D&D was to him. It is just not in his world.

I agree with Jay though. This Goldfarb character is a putz.

And all because of your gaming. D&D really is brain washing people. Who knew?

heh.

Got to love a good character history. I suspect though that a good GM might tell him to trim it down a bit. I mean who wants to read a novel length character history.

From: [identity profile] gingererer.livejournal.com

Hey, he put a lot of effort into that character history, so you should have to hear about it at every gaming session. And hear about it. And hear about it some more....

From: [identity profile] msrlapin.livejournal.com

Heh. I believe that the phrase "let me tell you about my character" was one of the more dreaded noises to hear back when we all played WoD....

From: [identity profile] shieldhaven.livejournal.com

Maybe he's actually disparaging the pro-Obama D&D crowd as opposed to the pro-McCain WoD crowd? (He's old enough that he's got to be looking at alternate methods of achieving unnatural longevity, if you know what I mean.)

From: [identity profile] msrlapin.livejournal.com

And you still dread the phrase "let me tell you about my character", no doubt.

From: [identity profile] jellibean.livejournal.com

I couldn't even read that whole thing. Which is good, since I look up at it and see "desperate group of people."

That comment is just unnecessary. It has nothing to do with McCain's war experience or his campaign, it's just a cheap shot at a group of people who are easy to insult. It DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE, and I can't believe it bothers me so much that I'm actually using capslock.

GAAAH. I'm not a McCain fan, but I'm not an Obama fan either. This is just another thing that McCain (or his campaign) has said or done that makes me want to bang my head against the wall. It's not serious enough for me to decide to vote for a 3rd party candidate, but I just feel like... if you're going to insult a group of people I identify with, why should I even bother voting for you (even if I was going to probably throw up afterward anyway)?
