Grandpa update.

Grandpa is home. He immediately had a couple of drinks despite being told not to drink. He has been lying down. He did eat some steak which is good cause he is anemic. He has apparently decided to not take one of his meds. That is grandpa. According to mom he may have some GI bleeding. They can't operate safely anyway as his lung function is so poor. He is resting comfortably and in better spirits though.

Mom is in Oak Ridge visiting. She got to look houses while there and seems to have seen at least one she likes. Herb apparently got to show her around. She should be going back sunday if all goes well.

That is what going on so far.

I imagine you're pretty concerned about the alcohol and his refusal to take one of his meds.

As frustrating as it must be that he doesn't do as he's advised, I'm sure that you're glad that he's better enough to go home to flout it in the first place. Yay for good thoughts.

Do what we did with my aunt when she came home from going to the hospital to detox.

Clear all the alcohol out of the house and hide the car keys and money (so that even if he decides to walk, he'll have no cash).

If you do that, though, it'll have to be permanent... We let her have an inch, and she went down hard.

Um dear, grandpa is a full grown adult and the money is his. How would you suggest we take it from him? Beyond the rather serious health problems that would come up when his temper exploded, you can't actually make him do anything he does not choose to do. While I am worried about him, I can't say he is incompetent, He gets to make up his mind there.

He is 88 years old. He has untreatable blood clots in both legs, which could break off and go to his heart at any time. He has a GI bleed that can't be corrected except by surgery, which he can't have because he has a lung function of 34%. The man is dying. Who are we to tell him what he can do with his last few weeks or months? Should he be miserable until he dies, just so that we can have him around for a little longer? I'm sorry, but he gets to make this choice.

To be fair, he is limiting himself to three drinks a day, and the medicine that he has refused to continue is seriously aggravating his already severe tremor. I can understand why he made the choice to quit taking it.
