To my comic reading pals, I have question. What was your first comic book? For me I am having a hard time remembering. It was either a Captain America comic, Rom the Space Knight, or Xmen. At least those are the oldest I can remember. The first clear story I remember was the Morlocks story in the Uncanny Xmen. That and dad had a coffee table reprinting of the first appearance of The Batman which I remember reading several times. I am not sure how old I was when I begane getting serious into comics. Grandma took me to my first comic shop in Clinton TN where I bought the second issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Not long after I remember dad took me to a comic shop in Cleveland TN. I saw an issue of the Crow on the shelf and several other indy comics.

I was just sitting here thinking about comics and how I loved them over the years. To my generation and probably other generations before me these were our myths. I can't tell you often I sat around with friends over the years talking about favorite superhero stories or who could beat who. I still love the thrill of opening an issue I have been waiting for to see what happens next. Will Iron Fist beat the monster who wants to kill him and eat his power? Will the skrull's kill someone before the heroes inevitably beat them?

My stories have gods and men, demons, and men in armor. My comics have ray guns and magic, lightening and thunder, beasts and giants. Heroes are strong and weak in all the right and interesting ways. Villains are dark and terrible. They are epics told in sequential art and when the story is done I close the book and turn to the next adventure.

Yes I do read other things. I am not the english scholar of some of my friends but I am by no means a man to turn away from a good book. I can loose my self in a novel or poetry with the best of them.

But comics hold a special place for me. They are my weekly bit of epic joy.

Anyways what is your first or favorite comic?

For my wife, it's an easy one - Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld.

For me? Probably a Batman - I was a big fan in 1st grade, when I didn't understand how camp the TV show was. I can remember the cover of a Brave and the Bold with Red Tornado. I read some great Superman anthologies when I was a kid, including good 'ol Superman-Red and Superman-Blue. The great Silver Age heroes - those were my icons.

First comic I think was a Wonder Woman comic. My mother took my brother and I to a comic book store and told us we could pick a few out. I think I picked Wondy because she was the only girl I recognized (I was probably 8-10 years old). I remember being disappointed because it didn't tell a whole story, and never really went back.

Then in college, I was introduced to Sandman TPBs. Cool stories! Complete stories! In order! I finally understood.

Current favorite comic is Fables.

Sgt Rock was interesting stuff. They would bounce between it being in a superhero world and telling very real World War 2 story.

Fantastic Four was the first comic book I collected.

The Grendel comic books from the late 80s/early 90s was my favorite comic book.

Sadly, I don't collect any longer, other than some graphic novels from time to time.

My 1st comic book I believe was GI Joe and I also had a few Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew. Don't laugh Captain Carrot kicked ass. Then I didn't read comics until I got a Few Web of Spiderman right around the time he got his black costume. Then I got a bunch of Iron Man and TNMT comics from a friend and I've been broke ever since. Right now my favorite comics to read are New Avengers and Mighty Avengers. Bendis kicks ass.

I read Captain Carrot. They even had a Infinite Crisis tie in. I keep trying to convince the guys in the audio production group that they heed to do a Captain Carrot show. It would clearly be brilliant.

I dimly remember reading a Legion of Super Heroes comic at age 4. I also have a dim recollection of a 70's era Avengers comic lying around the local library. And I remember reading a Spider-man comic around age 5 or 6.

Legion of Superheroes has been both terrible and absolutely brilliant at times, depending on the era.

The first comic book, like actual news stand comic that I remember having was the "Reign of the Supermen" arc with Superboy on the cover. Basically, Superboy's debut. I have no idea how I got it. I think it was someone saying "Oh here, you can have these".

The first comic I bought with my own money was the Trade Paperback of the first 6 issues of Young Justice. That was in, like, 2000. I could never have comics when I was younger. Reason was that where I lived, none of the grocery stores or bookstores had comic racks and the only place to get comics was from the comic book store. It was 5 miles away, across 2 highways, and my mom was convinced it was full of pedos. So I didnt get to go until I had a car and income of my own.

To me, comics were fun stories with action, humor, and occasional dramaz. Boy how they have changed. ::Glares at DC and Marvel::

Oh there is still the action, humor and occasional dramaz. Abnet and Lanning write some good adventure stuff. The Iron Fist run that Brubaker and Fraction did was brilliant and fun. The Incredible Hercules also sounds up the street you are describing.

First one I bought for myself would be Justice League of America after watching Super Friends on TV. Only comics I currently collect are Fables and Justice League.

You might enjoy Justice Society as well. Has a lot of the classic superhero feel as well as the theme of the lineage and family. Good stuff.

There are a number of people who agree with you on that. I have heard from others who like it because it has sort of reset him to the kind of stories they would write about him in the 60's and 70's. I am not buying his book currently so that speaks volumes.

my first first comic books were the small comics that came with the He-man action figures. Matter of fact I think I still have those somewhere if they haven't been destroyed by weather and time in the box.

The only series that I can think of that I bought and read was "The Punisher: War Journal" and I collected a couple of those before going into DnD and fantasy novels.

Of course I then read some of the stuff you handed me while living in the apartment.

My mother used to buy us Uncle Scrooge comics all the time, plus a smattering of Richie Rich, Little Dot, Archie, and Caspar the Friendly Ghost. I never liked spending my very small amount of disposable income on comics, as novels lasted longer.

ETA: No, now that I think-- my first comics, graphic novel-wise, were Maus and Maus II. I was in the 1st and 2nd grade, respectively. This may explain a lot.

It's a little lame, but.

Um... Archie. I started with Archie. Then I went on to the Archie Comics version of the Ninja Turtles, and also read some of the classic avengers stuff, gaining a lifelong love for Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel (the black lady one in the 70s), Captain America, and She Hulk. Then I read the first (I think) 10 issues of the 90's Catwoman series, after the breaking of the Batman. Finally, at about the same time in high school, I started reading Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, the Sandman, got some miniseries Rogue and Scarlet Witch, and also started reading Gen 13, which got me hard into paying attention to who was drawing my comics (Campbell & Garner ftw). It was a slippery slope from there.

That said, I think the Ramos/Ellis DV8 comic, (about the first 10 issues) are probably still my favorites, along with the first 10 issue bloc in the 90's of 'the new little Archie', which had updated art, far less romance, and was really fun and awesome. Also, that one Captain Marvel has a special place in my heart.

As is obvious from my desk, Fell is probably my favorite right now, barring obvious Eternal Classics like the Watchmen. But anyway, comics are probably my favorite medium, an... well yes. Hee.

Though special mention to JTHM, simply because I don't think I would have gotten through high school without Johnny the Homicidal Maniac #3. My poor copy... it's in pieces at this point, from living in my backpack so long. I need to get the trade at some point, hardcore.

Couldn't give you the number, but somewhere between 160-190, let's say. The one after Piotr breaks up with Kitty Pryde and she decides to start calling herself Shadowcat and hang out with Wolverine more.

good stuff there. It is pretty tied to the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine minisereis which was awesome and made Kitty Pryde into kind of a bad ass.

Well as a young boy my first comic book was an issue of Alf. My first major superhero comic that I bought with allowance was New Warriors, followed by Captain America, Amazing Spider-man and other Marvel books.

I have read some runaways. When it is on it is really good. When it is off....not so much.
