First off the weekend was laid back and fun. I did go see Charley and the chocolate factory. I really was not impressed with it. It had a couple of funny bits but overall it had no emotional content. I just could not care at all. Johny Depp looks like a deranged cousin of michael jackson and really did not do a good job. I liked the old people and Charley, but thats about it. I did see a movie on DVD I liked. The Ladykillers is a dark funny movie that operates on the strength of the interesting old black lady and Tom hanks. if you can see this movie it is worth the less than two hours to enjoy it.

Dawning star was good. There were a couple of frustration bits based on the D20 system and some bad die rolls. I am hoping this will come to anteresting story for every one involved.

Game was good. Don't worry about the frustrating stuff, we're still getting into combat pace with Modern, and figuring out the system differences. Heck, once someone picks up Burst or Double Tap, I think it will be good.

Sadly, I don't think I'm getting a single combat feat for a long time. Too much other important character stuff (Mastercrafter, Smart Plus, some other things). Though I might be able to hold back on Smart Plus now that [livejournal.com profile] koepkeb is with us and has a bunch of the alien tech tree.

Once I get a combat feat, it will probably be Far Shot. 180' range increment will be nice (still too short - only about 1/3 mile at max range)

Funny, I just saw Ladykillers and was bored to tears. On that I'll hope that I'll enjoy Charley! Different tastes are a wonderful thing sometimes :)

To be honest, I felt the movie was much truer to the vision as presented in the R. Dahl original story. While it was a humorous story, it definitely was equally dark. The Oompa-Loompa numbers were true to the R. Dahl originals, and I felt that it better captured the focus and intent of the original story. But, that is a matter of preference, really. I was, growing up, a huge fan of the original book, and had to have read it at least 4 times.

I was particularly pleased by the squirrel attack on Veruca Salt, as it was one of my favorite parts of the original story, and was greatly weakened in the earlier "Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory". But I can see where you might, if expecting a remake of the original movie, be left flat by this movie, as it has an entirely different focus and intent.
